Weekly Meeting - BC Hydro Update

Short Program: Pam Mann  Campbell River & District Adult Care Society.  Pam would like to update Rotarians on fundraising for the buidling at 1201 Cedar Street and invite Rotarians to join the Board.  She will have a short video to show which features a day at Adult Care.
 

Long Program: Steve Watson providing BC Hydro JJohn Hard Dam Seismic Upgrade Project update.  

BIO: Stephen has worked with BC Hydro for about 34 years. 24 of those years have been in public affairs – community relations to media relations. He has worked closely with the Campbell River community over that time. Stephen works out of BC Hydro’s Nanaimo District Office, though is up to Campbell River maybe a day a week, and recently, maybe a day a week to Victoria.

He has a Science Degree in Geography from the University of Nevada Reno, where he had a golf scholarship. He still plays competitive golf. Stephen also has a Master of Science from the School of Community and Regional Land Use Planning at UBC. 

Stephen was born and raised on Vancouver Island. He lives in Nanoose Bay with his wife, Lisa, and son, Jon Robbie, who just graduated grade 12.

9th Annual Rotary Fellowship Fishing Derby
Aug. 10, 2024 6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Derby starts at 6:30 am, with fish weigh-in at Pacific Playgrounds from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
BBQ and “Grill your Kill” at 4:30 p.m. Complimentary beverages (pop, juice) or BYOB
(Bring Your Own Beverage). Please bring your own Chairs.
Trophy Awards Ceremony and Prize Draws starting at 5:30 p.m.
Entry Fee:
$40 – each Fisher and Skipper, includes “Grill your Kill” & Burgers BBQ, door prize entry.
$10 – BBQ only, kids eat free (6 yrs. of age & under).
DERBY RULES:
DFO regulations and the Rotary “Four Way Test” apply in all decisions by the Organizing
Committee.
Fishers must purchase DFO tidal fishing licenses in advance (available on line), including
a salmon tag.
Skippers will provide fishing gear, tackle and life jackets, etc. Fishers should confirm with
Skippers what to bring on board in advance such as food, drink, water, clothing, etc.).
Monitor VHF Channel 68 during the event.
Fish weigh in takes place at the Weigh Station from 3:30 to 4:30p.m. Fish are to be
gutted and gills removed and iced; Official Weigh Master (OWM) will weigh the fish and
add12%. All decisions by OWM are final.
Club Trophy
Biggest salmon caught by a Rotary Club Member and/or their Guests.
Trophies (DFO Rules apply)
Salmon – largest by weight
Halibut - largest by weight.
Ling Cod – largest by weight.
Kids (16 and under) trophy - largest salmon, by weight.
Door Prizes - Fishers and Skippers are entered into the prize draw.

Monthly Theme: Basic Education and Literacy Month

Organized by: Tara Jordan & Myriah Foort

Our meeting this week will be offsite at Carihi high school to celebrate September theme of the month, Basic Eduction and Literacy Month. 

Please meet in the main parking lot at 11:15am, and we will walk in together to Library, where we will host an open session with students involved or interested to hear more about Interact and Rotary. Lunch hour for the school is 11:25am to 11:55am. 

We will enjoy some pizza lunch together and do some mingling with students and then have a high level presentation by Interact students and lead teacher Alexander Mader about Interact, ending with a presentation by Rotarian Tara Jordan, Interact leader on Interact and Rotary locally and internally. 

Once the students head off back to class, librarian Dionne Lapointe-Bakota where speak to literacy programs and focus at the school. 

And we hope to end with a small tour of the school with our meeting ending around 12:30pm.


Please RSVP by the end of the weekend/early Monday the 23rd to allow us to plan for lunch; RSVP through Clubrunner or email Myriah.
